

Google Photos, iCloud, and Amazon Photos are convenient. They're also expensive at scale, subject to policy changes, and — most importantly — they know exactly who is in every photo you've ever taken.
A self-hosted photo server runs on hardware you own, stores photos you control, and costs roughly zero per gigabyte after the initial setup. For families and small businesses with a decade of archives, the savings and privacy gains are substantial.
1. What a modern self-hosted stack looks like
The Immich project has changed the game. It gives you face recognition, smart albums, automatic mobile backup, web and mobile apps, and shared timelines — all running on a small box in your closet. Pair it with a ZFS pool or a RAID-backed NAS and you have a private Google Photos that your data never leaves.
2. Hardware that works
- Entry level: a Raspberry Pi 5 with a 4TB USB drive handles a small family.
- Standard: a used Dell OptiPlex or a Synology NAS with 8–16TB of mirrored storage.
- Serious: a custom box with ECC RAM and a ZFS pool for true bit-rot protection.
- Backups: 3-2-1 rule still applies — a local copy, an off-site copy (encrypted rclone to B2 or Wasabi), and an external USB rotated monthly.
3. What about sharing with family?
This is where people assume self-hosted will hurt. It doesn't. Immich supports share links, user accounts for each family member, and a native mobile app that auto-backs up from every phone in the household. Your parents can still tag your kid in a photo from their phone — it just happens on hardware you own.
Your family photos are the one data set you can never replace. Host them accordingly.
